I read with interest, again, the quote “the law will be enforced” which featured in the Stop! Because the sign said so! article.
This statement has now become monotonous. Every day on South African roads we are terrorised by the ‘untouchables’ – the mini-bus taxis.
Authorities – provincial and national – allow these terrorists to kill and maim with little or no consequence. Almost every day we read how overloaded taxis are involved in the carnage on our roads. Traffic signs, road markings and so forth, are there as part of the ‘Beautify South Africa Campaign’ as far as taxis go. What difference is there between the terror attacks in France and Germany where vehicles were deliberately ploughed into the crowds?
If there is an accident in the mining industry, labour unions such as Cosatu, cabinet ministers and MEC’s are very vociferous. Strikes and stay-aways are called.
However, they are very quiet when the taxi industry, where bread winners are wiped out, is involved. How is tax collected, because you do not travel for free?
Add to the above the cellphone. Taxis are loaded with passengers, music blaring, drivers have phones stuck to their ears, and all road rules are flatly ignored, including the signs around KHS.
If proof is needed, go and watch the traffic at the weekend robot and the taxi routes to the local schools.
