I am writing this letter to inform residents of Kenmare and the parents of learners of Laerskool Kenmare of rapidly deteriorating traffic conditions on Frederick Cooper Drive in front of the school.
I and other residents in that street have noticed that traffic conditions in the morning and afternoon have become very chaotic and dangerous when parents drop and collect learners.
This situation has now developed to a stage where one can expect very serious accidents on Frederick Cooper and the service road where cars park and learners move about.
Although we have engaged the principal of the school on numerous occasions over the past year, highlighting the danger to residents, road users and learners and the damage to the centre section with trees and light masts that is being seriously eroded by illegally parked vehicles, nothing has been done to address the dangers and illegal parking.
Do we wait for the first inevitable fatal accident or do something?
*Wouter Immelman, principal of LS Kenmare, gives feedback.
The safety of each learner at Kenmare is and remains a main priority for the school and its governing body, and is dealt with at the highest level by the governing body and management of Kenmare. Kenmare’s parents are continuously informed about traffic-flow problems and the school’s concern about it. However, we should only mention that the school borders on two public streets that are not only used by our parents but also by other road users who do not understand the challenges of school traffic flow and manage them on a daily basis.
Laerskool Kenmare has been in discussions with the local municipality for some time in order to find possible solutions and we trust that both parties will come up with solutions that will meet the needs of the community around the school.
