It has always been my dream to be an author. And I had thought that my books would be political. However, interestingly, they are not. My first book was religiously inclined and my second (yet to be published) is inspirational.
My second book will be published during Women’s Month, i.e. in August 2018. The book is about local women who are doing it for themselves but hardly receive media attention. And it is aptly titled Kagiso women making waves – on their own terms.
No book has ever been written about the progressive women of Kagiso. This is the first of its kind. The book seeks to the expose the local talent we have but don’t always acknowledge and recognise.
There are thirteen women featured in the abovementioned book. They are academics, entrepreneurs, boxing promoters, event organisers and senior managers. They are not just career-oriented; they are also involved in community upliftment. In simple terms, they are philanthropists.
These females are educated, enlightened and empowered. Among them are Professor Shirley Motaung, Dr Hajira Skaal, Dr Jennifer Molwantwa, Lungi Mtongwana-Ndou and Beverly Gunqisa, to name just a few. These women, who originate from Kagiso, are making waves in their respective careers and disciplines.
For instance, Professor Motaung is an academic, scientist and entrepreneur. She is also the Assistant Dean: Postgraduate Studies, Research and Innovation at the University of Tshwane. She also owns a company known as Global Health Biotech. Last year, she received the “Most Innovative Women of the Year” award from Premier David Makhura.
Part of my reason for writing this book was to expose positive role models within our society. The beauty of it is that these are the people the locals know and can identify with. They are also ordinary people who are doing extra-ordinary things. Watch this space.
