I wonder what the most difficult decision you have ever had to make might have been …
For my wife and me, it was a decision that was made more difficult because it was a decision made on someone else’s behalf.
More than 30 years ago, our little girl was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, cancer of the nervous system. A panel of doctors at Jo’burg Gen gave us the diagnosis, the prognosis and their expert advice. Looking at all the facts, we as a couple made the most difficult decision imaginable – treatment or not.
Through a storm of tears, and a tsunami of emotions, we decided to decline their offers. Who do you turn to, where do you go for assistance? When confronted with a decision the panel was waiting for, my wife said, “I can’t.”
This may sound strange to many, but my wife and I are not very religious. We have a strong bond with God, but it is not religion. Our decision was, no. No treatment. How did we get through it?
God’s help, friends, prayers and the whole community of Krugersdorp.
Today, when I am faced with people that have to make the biggest decision possible, I can assist, but only because of the road we have travelled. If you have to make a decision that is too big for you, turn to someone bigger than yourself. Turn to God.
