‘We need to change our bad attitudes’

Concerned citizen of Mogale City writes:

I am very concerned about the safety of my family and that of my fellow residents.

Over the past couple of years, I have observed several motorists failing to obey one of the simplest rules of the road (in my view) by failing to stop at intersections where there are stop signs.

I am afraid this bad behaviour is getting worse. My family and I have had lots of near misses where we were almost hit several times by motorists who failed to stop at stop streets.

This kind of behaviour is also rife in the mornings during the week when parents are eager to get their kids to schools.

I wonder what kind of behaviour we are teaching our kids if we fail to stop at stop streets? Children imitate what we do as adults. One time, I was almost hit by a teenager who was learning how to drive with the adult sitting by her side, and she still skipped the stop sign.

I have seen different people from all walk of lives failing to obey this simple rule of stopping at a stop street. My conclusion is that once you fail to stop at a stop street, it becomes a habit … a deadly habit, which might injure or even kill you, your loved ones and other innocent people.

I wish we could have more speed-humps at busy stop streets to prevent this kind of bad behaviour as it is clear that some adults in this town cannot obey the simple traffic law of stopping at the stop streets.

Finally, I believe that change starts with each and everyone of us, by simply obeying the rules of the road. We have a high level of road deaths in this country and I believe it is due to our attitude towards the traffic laws and other road users. We can blame the traffic officers or road conditions but we are the cause!

We are also the solution.
