In the past, South Africa was under apartheid rule. This cruel system has done irreparable damage, especially to the black nation. It has also stripped us of our dignity and murdered many of our own.
It’s a dark history that should remain in the past.
That said, during the apartheid era, there was order in the country. No offence intended. The value system of ubuntu (humanity) reigned supreme. Also, the young respected the old. Human beings were more important than money and material things. Preachers and teachers as well were respected by all and sundry. Not anymore.
Since the dawn of our democracy, things have changed for the worse.
Preachers are robbing believers of their hard-earned money in the name of the Lord. Criminals are also running amok and committing crimes with impunity. As if that is not enough, young boys are forming gangs and terrorising our communities.
Recently, a group of youngsters in Limpopo cruelly murdered an innocent soul, and filmed it on their cellphones. When one of them was asked how he felt about murdering a person, he casually answered that it is public knowledge that his father (a retired policeman) is untouchable. What has become of us?
Additionally, foreign nationals find it easy to come here and start mega churches – some without legal papers. Some, if not most, of them are false preachers who are intent on making a quick buck. They also mislead believers and get away with murder. This would never happen in another country; only in South Africa.
Where did we go wrong? The root problem of all this evil is the love of money. Nowadays people love money and material possessions more than they love human beings. As a result, we have lost our values. This is really killing our nation. We can’t go on like this.
