Last year I had a very profound encounter with a dominee in town. The conversation swung from general chat to deep things of God.
In one of those deep moments, an obviously concerned dominee asked the question that got my attention, “Where is God in all this?” He proceeded to describe some of the tendencies in the 21st century church. The traditional organ has been replaced by drums and guitars. The pulpit is now a stage, the worship a production. The show is enhanced by smoke machines, flashing lights and loud, pulsating music.
We looked at each other seeking guidance. “Where is God in all this?”
The minister, instead of a servant or shepherd, is now a rock star. The hair and clothes out of a Hollywood setting. Is it the time we live in?
Churches are working hard – not to reach the lost and hurting. The church is trying to attract consumer-orientated Christians from other churches to join them.
“Where is God in all of this?”
Allow me to share a personal thought. When I go to church, I want to experience God. I am hungry and thirsty after a long week. I don’t need a show, I desire a moment with God. The talk is long over, but I often reflect on it. As I look at the 2020 church, I ask, “Where is God in all of this?”
