Thabile Mange from Kagiso writes:
According to media reports and experts, the coronavirus started in Wuhan, a city in China.
Its symptoms are flu-like (high temperature, headache, sore throat) but it’s deadly. If it finds you with a weak immune system, it kills you. Fast.
Covid-19 has been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization, following its unprecedented spread and the threat it poses to humanity. In certain parts of the world, such as in Italy and the USA, it is killing people like ants.
These are the developed countries that have the means to manage this phenomenon, but are struggling. This shows that the pandemic is life-threatening and poses a health challenge.
Yet there are people who believe that it doesn’t exist. Either they are in denial or ignorant. Fortunately our government responded quickly on the challenge. The Minister of Health, Dr Zweli Mkhize, keeps the nation informed about the developments around the coronavirus spread and challenges. In response to the virus challenge, schools were closed four days before the scheduled time for their holidays. A week or so later, the president announced a 21-day national lockdown.
He then extended the lockdown by a further two weeks. Then he announced the downgrading of the lockdown according to levels. On the West Rand, the pandemic has claimed two lives; one of the victims is a well-known man from Honeydew, who was a Christian and attended church in Muldersdrift.
And the number of people who are getting infected on the West Rand is growing. In Kagiso, residents are going about their lives as if nothing is happening. They don’t honour the lockdown regulations and also don’t practice social distancing.
It’s worse at the mall and ATMs. (Apparently the same is happening in other townships.) This is a cause for concern. People need to be aware that Covid-19 is deadly and it kills.
It also has a potential to wipe out us all. Additionally, it has no cure. To stop the spread, we need to stay at home and wash our hands regularly. Surely, that is not asking too much?
