Familiar things

Pastor Gerrit Mes writes:

As creatures of habit, we love familiar things, and we struggle with change. You can imagine how the corona pandemic has upset billions of people’s lives. Not mine of course.

Yes, yours and mine, even as we live in denial. I realised how powerful familiar things are to me. On the first day of lockdown 3, I was walking through a mall. My eyes caught an open door with a long forgotten, familiar picture.

A barbershop for men. I walked on, turned around in disbelief. It was like going back to my childhood. A man cutting men’s and boys’ hair with an electric razor. The chair, the sounds and the men sitting were so familiar. After being sanitized I received a much-needed haircut. It was a great experience because of corona.

Our learning has changed. Our work practices have changed. Our socialising, travelling and shopping are all new. But as I sat there, I felt a calmness, something familiar, and I felt peace.

Going to church is familiar for some of us. Just that experience of something that cannot ever change.

There is a little gem in the Bible that gives us a feeling of stability, familiarity and roots. Hebrews 13:8, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever”. Yes, everything may change, but one thing remains the same, God. In the midst of change, appreciate familiar things.

God bless you.
