Who and what can you trust?

The truth is, none of us can go through life not trusting anyone.

Imagine going through life without being able to trust a single person – not family, friends or the people you depend on.

During the trauma of Covid-19 and the disruption of the lockdown, I have realised the value of trust and the effects of distrust.

Who and what can you trust? Are the statistics correct or false? Are the restrictions or bans on the sale of tobacco and alcohol for the benefit of a few very senior government officials? Who can we trust? Social media, the news outlets and the many conspiracy theories add to our distrust of, yes, everybody.

The truth is, none of us can go through life not trusting anyone. So, what do you do? Put your head in the sand like the ostrich or just go with the flow?

Trust must start with me. Can I trust myself? Can others trust me? Is my word my word, and am I always honest? Do I implore half-truth, and am I economical with the truth?

So, at the start of each day, it should be my prayer, “God, help me to live my life in such a way that people will be able to trust me”.

As a husband, father, friend, employer and employee, may I be worthy of complete trust. I so wish I could say the words that Jesus said in John 14:1, “Trust God and also trust in me”.

At your funeral one day, tributes will be shared. Your achievements and your characteristics will be highlighted. Imagine if, at your funeral, people could say, “Here is one person I could honestly trust”.
