• Pastor Gerrit Mes of the AFM Pentecostal Fellowship writes:
I recently had the privilege of taking my wife to a local coffee shop for a treat.
Soon after we were seated, a strikingly beautiful young lady walked in and made her way to an empty table. Heads turned and eyes followed her gracious entry. Beautiful and perfectly groomed she really did make an entrance. She sat alone at her table, focusing on her cellphone.
She looked as if she just came off the cover of a magazine. A few minutes later her friend arrived. She jumped up, gave the friend a big hug. It was then that the picture changed.
As she sat down, her eyes were red and her cheeks soaked in tears. I didn’t hear their conversation but I knew she was heartbroken. So often we look at people and envy their assets. Physical or material. Beautiful people, rich people, famous people who, on the surface, look so perfectly happy. We could be tempted to think, ‘if only I looked like that or had all that money, I would be happy’.
I am not particularly good-looking, and I know many people who have more than I have. But when I sit down and count all my blessings, I realise that I don’t have to envy others. Next time you see someone who seems to have it all, remember this young lady in the coffee shop and thank God for all you have that money cannot buy.
One line in the Bible, a mantra, is worth remembering, “Learn to be content”.
Beauty and money can be a blessing, but they could also be a curse. Love yourself, you are special.
