Power of association

Not just a place for my funeral, Church is my happy place.

• Pastor Gerrit Mes of the AFM Pentecostal Fellowship writes:

We associate sun with fun, cows with biltong, dogs with pets and God with church. But the sun is more than fun, it can be electricity.

Cows can be workers in the field; dogs, your four-legged children; and God more than church.

With the lockdown now partly behind us and the churches partially open, I realise God is more than church. I can pray, read my Bible, even sing hymns in my home, car and in the park. God isn’t in a building or limited to a Sunday. God lives in our hearts.

During Covid, many of us stopped associating God with church, which is great. But after months of the church doors being bolted closed, it is so special to be in church on a Sunday.

Not just for God but my spiritual family – people with a common heart and mind. A place in a rushed world where I can stop for a moment and catch my breath.

In the future millions of Christians may not return to attend church on Sundays. There are just so many other exciting things to do. They may not associate God with church in the future. To me Sundays, church, are like my Father’s house, my family, my faith. Not just a place for my funeral, Church is my happy place.
