Prove it

I have often been asked, “Can you prove that there is a creator, a God, a master mind?”. The answer is, no. But can you prove that there is no God, no creator, no master mind?

• Pastor Gerrit Mes of the AFM Pentecostal Fellowship writes:

As a pastor I have often been asked, “Can you prove that there is a creator, a God, a master mind?”. The answer is, no.

I cannot prove there is a creator. My simple reply, if you are one of those who have asked this question, “Can you prove that there is no God, no creator, no master mind. 40 years ago I stood in the Joseph Dadoo maternity theatre. Anxiety gripped my heart as I watched my wife experiencing birth pains. Moments later, as I held our firstborn, I came face to face with a dilemma. Could this be an accident, the result of time, matter and space? Like many of you, I cannot prove that there is a God, but it seems impossible to imagine that there is no God.

How do tiny, unschooled, ill-equipped little swallows migrate annually from one side of the planet to another? They left us a few weeks ago. No GPS, yes, this morning they woke up in a nest they built years ago.

How? I don’t know, unless the same creator that made you and I made them. Fauna and flora are undeniable proof to me of a creator.

That does not solve a problem, in fact, it creates a problem. Why did he create us? Yes, I can hear your question. “Pastor, why did he create us?”

My answer may disappoint you. I don’t really know. One thing I know is that this creator took time and lots of thought in creation. He must love us. I cannot prove God’s existence, but no one has ever really proven that he does not exist. Makes you think.
