Guard against hypocrisy

The biggest single complaint against religion and religious people is that they don’t always practice what they preach.

• Pastor Gerrit Mes of the AFM Pentecostal Fellowship writes:

“An ounce of practice is worth more than a ton of preaching.”

When I read this, it made so much sense. I have preached thousands of sermons and written just as many articles. Yet, it is my actions, not my words, that reveal who I am. You have heard it said, “Practice what you preach”. But today I say, let your actions be your sermon.

The biggest single complaint against religion and religious people is that they don’t always practice what they preach. Jesus faced so much criticism and his response was, “Do not believe me, then, if I am not doing the things my Father wants me to do”. – John 10:37.

Actions speak louder than words. Actions outside the holy building. During conflict, in a traffic incident or a family dispute. People are watching us. People who never read the Bible but know its contents.

A thousand great sermons can be rendered useless by one slip of the tongue. One careless word or action could destroy an entire legacy.

Before we preach to our children, to our friends and total strangers, maybe it would be good to remind ourselves of Gandhi’s words, “An ounce of practice is worth more than a ton of preaching”.

Putting your best foot forward is a sign of hypocrisy. People are watching your other foot. A good sermon must be backed up with a life that tells the same story.
