Who knows you?

How many people really know you? The real you.

• Pastor Gerrit Mes of the AFM Pentecostal Fellowship writes:

Many years ago, the News carried a picture of a man who died on our streets. Cause of death was substance abuse and neglect. The caption read, “Can anyone help us to identify this man?” Born in Krugersdorp. Raised among us yet, when he died, no one, it seemed, knew who he was. His mom recognised the man in the picture as her only child, long estranged from the family.

Got me thinking. How many people know me? Yes, my face is easily recognised and lots of stories of me told. But how many people really know me? My joys and sorrows, my victories and defeats. The real me. Strong on the outside, sometimes vulnerable on the inside.

Now to get personal. How many people really know you? The real you. Does your spouse know you? Do your children know you?

It would be so sad, living your whole life in a community, a tribe, even a family, and at your funeral no one really knows you. One verse in the ‘good book’ brings a bit of solace. Luke 12:7, “Even the hairs of your head have all been counted. So do not be afraid; you are worth much more than many sparrows.”

At your service and mine, the One who created us will know us.

Why not open the door of your heart to someone today – not anyone, someone you love and trust. Only you have the keys to the door of who you really are. If we keep fooling everybody, no one will know us. Start by knowing yourself.
