Count your blessings

There is more to 2021 than Covid-19.

• Pastor Gerrit Mes of the AFM Pentecostal Fellowship writes:

During Covid many of us have lost perspective.

Horror stories of people dying alone in hospital on ventilators haunt all of us. Don’t get me wrong, the coronavirus is real and its power should not be underestimated. Even those who survive often take months to fully recover.

But there is more to 2021 than Covid-19. Many people are quick to tell stories of mild symptoms and quick recoveries.

Some, after it is over, tell stories of courage, comradery and a new appreciation of life. It is only when we are close to losing everything that we realise how blessed we are. Counting our blessings is more than psychological warfare. It can release positive endorphins into our blood stream.

Always focusing on death and doom has just the opposite effect. It can, the experts tell us, affect our psychological well-being and even have real physical consequences. So don’t deny reality, don’t put your head in the sand, but look at your life as a whole. You have many blessings.

From your position of blessings, it is your duty to pray for people less fortunate than yourself. Just say it a few times a day, “I am blessed, I am blessed”. See what happens.
