• Pastor Gerrit Mes of the AFM Pentecostal Fellowship writes:
Yes, we all talk to ourselves. Some do it out loud. Others just in our heads, but we all talk to ourselves.
But be careful not to tell yourself what you want to hear. Years ago, we had a Bill in our church. Bill drove a very nice car. A bit big, a bit old and a bit heavy on petrol. But Bill was convinced it was a great car.
One day Bill said, “I am going to sell the car”. I asked why. His reply was classic.
“It is old, it is heavy on fuel and will start giving trouble soon.” Actually, all he wanted was a new car and he was busy convincing himself.
If you want out of your marriage, it is so easy to talk yourself out of it. “I don’t love her or him, we cannot communicate. She does not love me. I would be happier with someone else.” No, it is not true, you are just talking to yourself, trying to convince yourself to get divorced. Be careful to lend your ears out to be told what you want to hear.
The Bible is so true when it says, “God, place a guard at my ears and heart”. Don’t tell yourself what you want to hear.
