LETTER: My thoughts on the Mayor’s maiden State of the City Address

On Wednesday, June 15, 2022, the Mogale City Executive Mayor Tyrone Gray delivered his maiden State of the City Address.

Gray leads the coalition government, under the DA banner, in Mogale City. Gray was probably the last mayor in the country to deliver the SOCA. He did not say what could have been the problem that has led the city to hold the SOCA so late. We are already in June.

The Mayor didn’t say much about the youth except that they form part of the majority that is unemployed. The city’s plan is to empower the youth through skills development and entrepreneurial skills. In fact, the city has already started doing that, he said.

In his speech, the mayor also talked about his first 100 days in office. The city has held IDPs, back to school campaigns and annual business indaba, he disclosed. In addition, the city also lodged an objection to Eskom’s annual tariff hike.

He also touched on the electricity subject. According to Mayor Gray, there is a huge electricity maintenance backlog. However, street light maintenance is improving. He also reported that the area called Soul City will soon be electrified.

On the infrastructure, the mayor said the city will invest in infrastructure, and close potholes and improve our roads. But he did not say how the city is going to deal with flooding during heavy rains. Many houses in Kagiso experienced flooding during the rainy season.

The event started on time and ended on time. However, there was no lunch served, only breakfast. I’m not sure if it was a cost-cutting measure or what. According to the African practice, you don’t invite people and don’t offer them food.
