LETTER: Do you have a happy place?

'Maybe just reading this article can be a moment in a happy place for you. God bless you today' - local pastor.

• Pastor Gerrit Mes of the AFM Pentecostal Fellowship writes:

Do you have a happy place? In the midst of your personal war zone, frantic activities, do you have a happy place? For some it is a venue full of people, for others it is a place of silence and solitude.

My happy place is church. I love that Psalm that says, “I was glad when they said unto me, ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord’.” (Psalm 122:1)

For many people, church is not a happy place. So sterile in its welcome. Laughter is frowned on. You have to be quiet, straight-faced and ready for a hiding.

Made aware of all your weaknesses and failures. How can it be a happy place? More than 70% of South Africans claim to love Jesus. Yet, not even 10% attend church on a Sunday. As a child I remember the advert, “Kiss it better with a band aid strip”.

Church, the building, the rituals have very little to offer, but if it is my Father’s house, I look forward to just being there. I cannot control what happens in my week, but somehow I feel better prepared once I have been to my Father’s house. All of us need a happy place in a world full of unhappiness.

PS. Maybe just reading this article can be a moment in a happy place for you. God bless you today.
