LETTER: Why do you go to church?

'Going to church, plain and simple, should be about God, not people' – pastor.

• Pastor Gerrit Mes of the AFM Pentecostal Fellowship writes:

A certain parishioner, upset with all the hypocrites, decided to leave and never go back to church.

The minister enquired about the decision. “Why?” “Plain and simple, the church is full of hypocrites gossiping and judging others.” The minister did something I would never have thought of. He filled a glass with water and asked the irate member to walk around the inside of the church during worship without spilling a drop.

The round was completed and the minister asked if the person had noticed what the others were doing while he walked around the church. The response was priceless. “I didn’t see, I was watching the glass and the water.”

The minister’s reply blessed me. “Maybe if you focused on God when you come to church, you won’t be exposed to the hypocrisy of others.”

Going to church, plain and simple, should be about God, not people. If you and I go to church to watch others or to be seen, well, maybe we have missed the point. Going to church must be about you and your heavenly Father. The point was taken and the member didn’t leave the church. Why do you go to church?
