• Pastor Gerrit Mes of the AFM Pentecostal Fellowship writes:
My wife, like many people, talks to herself. It is not strange to hear her in the room alone, talking to herself. Psychologists call it “self talk”.
The habit can be positive or negative. It is beneficial to talk to yourself, trying to solve a problem, trying to get to a solution. By talking to yourself, you can inspire yourself, even motivate yourself. It is normal and natural to talk to yourself. Even children talk to themselves while playing alone.
Like any good thing, there is a dark side. If you are anxious or depressed, you can focus the “self talk” on things that are negative. This can become toxic and lead to isolation and even self-harm.
I find myself talking to God. Many times, it is a one- sided conversation. I tell of my problem, my frustration and my fears. Does he ever talk to me?
This may sound strange to you. Yes and no. Some religious people claim that God talks to them all the time. I doubt it. For me God talks to me through things around me, through people, even total strangers. God talks to all of us.
But to hear him, you have to do the following, keep quiet, wait and watch.
After 43 years of marriage, I know that communication is far more than talking. My wife and I can communicate without saying a word. God often talks without saying a word.
