Kurgersdorp judokas kick butt at national champs
The competition was tense, but there was a lot of positive energy from both the participants and the supporters.
Every year, the KJK Judo Club brings home a bunch of medals from the South African Judo Open Championships (SAJO), and this year they made sure to keep up their legacy.
Earlier in July, in the Callie Human Hall at the University of the Free State, Sensei Katja Bruwer’s Judokas had the opportunity to shine among the brightest stars by competing against the strongest judokas in South Africa.

And to top it, each of them who won medals in the African Kata Championship received an amazing award of R2 500 from JSA for their achievements. The awards were handed over before the SAJO Opening Ceremony started.
Andrew Diab was awarded the JSA Floating Trophy for Technical Official of the Year. This is the first time this trophy has been awarded to a member of KJK and the district.

Katja, who has always been a fan of teamwork, said the club, as part of the West Rand Judo Association, showed incredible spirit and ensured that everyone felt welcome.
She said the competition was tense, but there was a lot of positive energy from both the participants and the supporters.
“What made the championships even more positive was the excellent weather. Bloemfontein gave us sun and warmish afternoons, perfect for judo.”
The famous Diab trio, Keagan, Raydon, and Garren raked in an astonishing number of medals – five gold, three silver and two bronze in various categories.
Here’s the results for the Krugersdorp judokas, according to the schools they attend:
Laerskool Kenmare:
Kyle Wolter – Bronze medal for kata.
Morne Venter – Silver medal for Individual Fighting, and gold for Team Event (West Rand Boys – 12 years)
Nico Pieterse – Bronze medal for Individual Fighting, another bronze for kata and a silver for the
Team Event (West Rand Boys 13 and 14 years)
Anthony Mommsen – Gold medal for kata
Christiaan Theron – Gold medal for kata
Hendrik Aberts – Bronze medal for Individual Fighting, and gold for Team Event (West Rand Boys – 12 years)
Otto Van Eeden – Gold medal for Team Event (West Rand Boys – 12 years)
St Ursula’s School:
Raydon Diab – One gold medal, a silver and a bronze for kata, and a silver for the Team Event (West Rand Boys – 17 years)
Garren Diab – one gold and one bronze medal for kata
Keagan Diab – Gold medal for Individual Fighting, silver for kata and gold for the Team Event (West Rand Girls – 12 years)
Krugersdorp High School:
Moagi Molefe – Bronze medal for Individual fighting, one silver and one bronze for kata and a silver for the Team Event (West Rand Boys 13 and 14 years)
Hoërskool Noordheuwel:
Dewald Schultz – Bronze medal for Individual Fighting, one gold and two silvers for kata and a silver for the Team Event (West Rand Boys – 17 years)
Hoërskool Monument:
Franco Lottering – Silver medal for Team Event (West Rand Boys – 17 years)
