MX-perts battle it out in dirt and dust

"With motocross I've found that passion becomes your identity and that identity breaks all barriers."

It was a fine day for racing when motocross experts from all over Gauteng gathered at Dirt Bronco for the fifth leg of the Mayfair Gearbox Gauteng Motocross (MX) Series.

With these words of Travis Pastrana in mind, racers set off to the tracks to start the series. Pastrana is an American professional motor-sports competitor and stunt performer who has won gold medals at several championships and X Games.

Phillip du Plessis won the MX50 race after finishing first in two of the three heats. Close behind him was Thor Johnson who won the second heat, securing him a second place overall.

Although Chase Linley finished fifth in the first and third heat, his points secured a third overall placement for the day.

The MX50 race seemed like the most competitive as parents encouraged their five- and six-year-olds to give their all during the three heats on the small track.

James Thompson finished first in all three heats of the MX65 race, securing him a first place overall for the day. Close behind him was Barend du Toit and Nathan Kuhn who came second and third. The 65cc race was held on the big track.

Davin Cocker won the MX85/ pro-mini category. Trichtan Lonsdell surprised the crowd with a second place after he finished ninth in the first heat of the MX85/ pro-mini race. He also finished 12th in the second heat and seventh in the third heat. His points total ultimately secured his second place in this category. Wesley McGavin, who also ended in the top 10 instead of the top three, secured a third place in this category.

Jayden Ashwell finished first in all three heats in the Open Senior category – even though the heats were divided into two groups – taking the overall win of the day.

Justin Thompson finished in a close second place in all three combined heats and took second prize for the day.

Ricky Raaff and Ruben Aucamp battled it out to the very end for third place, with Ricky finishing in third place in heat one and three and Ruben finishing third in the second heat. But in the end Ricky took the overall third place.

The final round of the Mayfair Gearbox Series is also known as the Pre-Nationals or National Qualifiers, and winners of each category of the final round will qualify for the chance to compete against the best motocross riders in South Africa.
