Underprivileged children learn how to ‘drive’
The programme hosts 20 children at Jim and Jerry's and teaches them how to golf.
Joseph Makahanya, leader of Kagiso Porto Soccer Academy approached Jim and Jerry’s Driving Range with the concept of an Under-privileged Golf Development Programme for children in the hope that young talent is recognised and to ensure that skills are developed from an early age.
And Jim and Jerry’s, in conjunction with the academy, recently fulfilled the dream by hosting 20 children at the driving range and teaching them how to golf.
“We currently host a group of up to 20 children of various ages up to 17 years. This programme runs every second Friday at Jim and Jerry’s in Ruimsig, where they receive coaching from Ulrich van den Heever, a PGA-accredited Golf Pro,” said Steven Blacklock, a member at Jim and Jerry’s.
“Going forward, we are hoping to extend this programme beyond the junior members of the soccer academy and open the golf clinic to a larger portion of the under-privileged community of Kagiso.”
The benefit of this programme is felt by more than just the members of the Kagiso Porto Soccer Academy as the children who attend the programme take this knowledge back to their community.
You can feel the excitement in the air as they get ready to hit a ball. It is quite amazing to watch as they embrace what they are being taught and apply it to their swing. At the end of the golf clinic the kids all sat down for juice and a snack.
