Ju-do good – Ju-win

"Even the children who did not win medals fought their hearts out and displayed great courage, sportsmanship and fighting spirit."

Excellent results were achieved by children from Laerskool Kenmare who take judo lessons at KJK Judo. The SA Schools Judo Tournament was held at the University of Johannesburg, Soweto Campus on 7 and 8 October. Over 600 children from schools in different parts of South Africa took part.

The Novices, those children who have not yet participated in National Ranking Events or the South African Open Judo tournament, competed on Saturday, while the Advanced students had their chance to show off their skills on the Sunday.

As a group, the Kenmare children achieved excellent results. They worked hard and their results are well-deserved.

For most of the Novice Judoka, this was the first time they had attended a tournament of this magnitude.

“Their performance was impressive and they made me very proud. Even the children who did not win medals fought their hearts out and displayed great courage, sportsmanship and fighting spirit,” said Sensei Katja Bruwer.

Two of the judoka who took part in the Novice event, Anthony Mommsen and Christiaan Theron, also participated in the SA Open Judo Championships (Kata) during July in Bloemfontein. The two, both aged 9, performed a beautiful Nage no Kata (Set 1 hand techniques – throws) to win the gold medal.

The advanced children, who have also achieved some good results on district, provincial and national level this year, faced some tough opposition on Sunday, but did superbly well.
