Six-year-old BMX Champion dreams big

Even though a local six-year-old has only been riding for about a year, he managed to walk away the winner of the Six and Under Division at his very first South African BMX Championships in Kempton Park last month.

While most six-year-olds are learning to read and write, Matthew Fulton, 6, is pedalling his way to the top of South Africa’s BMX league.

During the competition, roughly 176 riders from across South Africa, including Durban and Johannesburg, as well as Zimbabwe, to name just a few, gave their best.

This follows after competing in various qualifying rounds at club, regional and national events that led up to the championships.

His journey began last year when he and his parents drove past the X-Stream Bike and Adventure Park for the first time. According to his mother, Candice, they noticed mountains of sand and Matthew insisted on having a closer look.

Needless to say, they went to the park. “When he saw what was going on, he said ‘This is what I want to do’, and we supported him 100 per cent,” Candice said. Matthew received his first BMX two weeks later.

Later he joined the Cradle Cycling Club, Cycling South Africa and Gauteng BMX in order to compete on a national level.

He is now hoping to go to the BMX World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan in the Middle East next year in July. When he’s older he would also like to compete in the BMX Olympics under guidance of his current coach, Donavan Mienie.
