Swords clang as knights battle

Spectators watched sparks fly as knights armoured with 25 to 40kg of steel fought using real steel medieval weapons.

The rattling of swords and the scuffling of leather shoes in the dusty ring. A sword stroke, and a death – or at least the portrayal of death in the Middle Ages.

On Saturday, 24 February at Voorhuis Trading Post Centre in Magaliesburg, the greatest warriors came together to fight for a chance to go on a quest to Scotland in May this year.

This was the Battle Heritage SA Qualifying Tournament for the International Medieval Combat Federation (IMCF) 2018, hosted by Battle Heritage South Africa (BHSA), the country’s national organisation for the international sport of Full Contact Medieval Combat.

The tournament, which was presented in true real-steel medieval combat fashion drew many spectators, who watched sparks fly as knights armoured with 25 to 40kg of steel fought using real steel medieval weapons, in buhurt/melee (group combat) and duel (one-on-one) categories. The sounds of metal on metal reverberated around the grounds, which shook as defeated opponents fell in this full-contact fighting sport where wrestling, punching and kicking are allowed alongside the finer elements of swordplay.

Gauteng was represented by the JuggerKnights club.

The battle served as a qualifying event for teams of knights and individuals to qualify for the South African team that would travel to Perth in Scotland to take part in the World Championships, hosted by the IMCF between 10 and 13 May.
