Her signature is sure to become an autograph

"I've learnt so much over the past few months and my dream is to eventually become part of the South African Hockey Team known as the Proteas."

Refilwe Maseko is an extraordinary hockey player from Krugersdorp High School who has a bright future in the sport.

She made it into the Southern Gauteng A hockey team by competing against the toughest and best players in the York High School Easter Hockey Festival earlier this year and played so well, she was noticed.

Now she and her team are readying themselves to play against the greatest players and teams in the country. They will challenge teams in the Inter-provincial Tournament later this month in KwaZulu-Natal.

“I’ve learnt so much over the past few months and my dream is to eventually become part of the South African Hockey Team known as the Proteas.”

She’s excited about participating in this tournament because it gives her good exposure to South African Hockey and a chance to get into the Protea team by going through a selection process thereafter.

But, even though her dream is to be one of the greatest players SA has to offer, she also acknowledges the power of hockey to serve as therapy in the stressful life of a matric learner at her school.

“If I don’t play, I feel the pressure of being a Grade 12 learner more intensely,” she said. “I try to balance my life with hockey’s therapeutic qualities.”

She also plays soccer and feels that both team sports offer her friendships that will last forever, opportunities that keep her reaching further, and a release from everyday life.

Her motto in life is “Work hard until your signature becomes an autograph,” a quote from an unknown author.
