Pilots reach for the sky

The competition consisted of two categories, namely Spot Landing and Static Aircraft Display.

The Krugersdorp Flying Club hosted another spectacular annual flying competition at the Jack Taylor Airfield on Saturday 21 July.

The competition consisted of two categories, namely Spot Landing and Static Aircraft Display. According to club committee member and function organiser, Ian Morison, aircraft capable of similar speeds were divided into groups of four in the Spot Landing competition.

The pilots competed against each other to see who could land his/ her aircraft closest to the line on the runway.

“We had 35 entries in the Spot Landing competition, plus quite a few categories in which prizes could be won,” he said.

The Spot Landing competition results are as follows:

• Overall Member Winner: Graeme McCarthy

• Second Prize Member Winner: Kim Pratley

• Third Prize Member Winner: Brian Davidson

• Best Female Pilot Winner: Celia Lastrucci

• Best Student Pilot Winner: Ciara Huntley

• Greaser (Best Landing) Winner: Roel Stausebach

• Non-member Winner: Karl Jensen

The Static Aircraft Display Competition results are as follows:

• Certified Single Category: Hansie van der Merwe

• Non-Certified Home Built Category: Jerimi Venter

• Restored Aircraft Category: Andries van Tonder

• Vintage Pre-1950 Category: Leon Meintjes

• Helicopter/ Gyrocopter Category: Jean-Pierre Duponsel

• Helicopter Turbine Category: Helivate

• Oldest Aircraft Category: Brian Davidson

• Best Warbird Category: Steve George

It was not only a day for the pilots to put their skills to the test – it was also an opportunity for all aircraft lovers and youngsters to explore the thrilling world of aviation.
