Former KHS learner takes on the 2019 Dakar
Krugersdorper Ross Rally is competing in the 2019 Dakar challenge in South America.
The 2019 Dakar has kicked off on 6 January in Lima in Peru, and a Krugersdorper is one of the racers.
This year is the 41st edition of the Dakar Rally during which motorcycles, quads, cars and even trucks take on the most intense off-road challenges.
The event will finish again in Lima on 17 January after 10 stages of competition.
Ross Branch, an former Krugersdorp High School (KHS) learner and off-road motorcycle racer has finally made it to the Dakar Rally – a dream he has been chasing since he was a boy.
On his Facebook page Branch said he had some difficulty with the navigation at first but that it was a learning experience.
During the second stage Branch broke his sixth gear and the team had to replace the bike’s engine. This cost Branch a 15-minute penalty and dropping eight places overall.
The 32-year-old athlete has had his fair share of difficulties but also accomplishments over the past few years. He has been awarded South African colours in Motocross, he was the African Motorcycle Union (AMU) champion in 2003, 2007 and 2009, and the FIM Africa champion in 2011.
On the KHS Facebook page the school shows their support for Branch by saying, “Krugersdorp High School would like to wish past learner, Ross Branch, all the best for the #dakar2019 #114. We are supporting you all the way!#proudlykhs.”
If you would like to keep up to date with Branch’s progress you can follow him on Facebook.
