Facelift for annual Route 66 MTB experience

The three-day Route 66 MTB Experience is the perfect event to get in some good foundational training.

Bridgestone’s challenging annual Route 66 Mountain Bike Experience is back for its ninth year with some new additions and an increase in prize money.

The event, which has constantly gained popularity since it first took place in 2011, will run over three days, being 15 to 17 February, offering a tough 85km for Day 1, 75km for Day 2 and 60km for Day 3. It starts and ends at Kloofzicht Lodge, in the beautiful Cradle of Humankind.

The three-day Route 66 MTB Experience is the perfect event to get in some good foundational training.

Another addition is the introduction of The Bridgestone Route 66 Lite.

This is still a three-day stage race taking place at the same time on mostly the same route as the tougher race, but Days 1 (only 64km) and 2 (65km) will be shorter. Day 3 will still culminate in the ‘Fast & Furious’ 60km route.

There will be a Chauffeur Drive Service for Day 1 and Day 3 riders who will be able to pre-book this service and will have professional drivers who take their cars to the finish line on Day 1 and Day 3.

Finally, for corporate and leisure solo riders seeking a taste of competitive mountain biking without the commitment of a three-day affair, there is the Route 66 Mini Experience, a one-day ‘Fast & Furious’ 60km ride. This is the same route that the three- and two-day riders will be doing, taking place on the Sunday, 17 February, and it will suit the rider who is reasonably fit.

All entrants will receive a goodie bag for the event with special gifts for those who tackle the two- and three-day events. There will be food, coffee and craft beer vendors selling their wares to the riders and spectators at Maropeng on Friday and Saturday, and on the Sunday, a complimentary lunch will be provided to the riders at Kloofzicht Lodge. There will be showers at the finish and a free shuttle service, compliments of Luxliner Coaches to take riders from the finish back to the start to collect their vehicles on Day 1 and Day 3. The finish at Kloofzicht Lodge is always a fun experience, with a special lunch for all competitors and invited guests.

Entries close 1 February so anyone still wishing to participate needs to urgently visit https://www.route66mtb.co.za.
