[WATCH] Solo Swimmer enters Day 9 while battling many obstacles

Martin describes the experience so far as daunting.

Today marks Day 9 of Krugersdorper Martin Hobbs’ attempt to swim a gruelling 581 kilometres in 45 to 60 days in Lake Malawi.

Martin is doing what is often referred to as a crazy stunt, not only to secure a Guinness World Record, but also to create awareness for the Smile Foundation.

Martin is not allowed to leave the water when it’s lunch time. His team devised a plan to help him eat while in the water.

The Smile Foundation is a leading South African non-governmental organisation and charity, with a comprehensive health care vision for children living with facial conditions.

Martin, 45, arrived at Chilumba in Malawi yesterday. This will be his base camp for the next seven days.

In his vlogs (video blogs) on his Facebook page, Solo Swimmer, Martin describes the experience so far as daunting with extremely high temperatures, both in the water and out, water currents and swells and the occasional lake flies which often appear and look like clouds of smoke.

Martin is not allowed to leave the water when it’s lunch time. His team devised a plan to help him eat while in the water.

Together with these challenges, Martin is also finding it hard to complete the 15km average a day target, but he is pushing through and if all goes well, aims to finish on 5 April.

The News wishes Martin all the luck in the world, and knows he is making his town and country proud.
