Junior karate kids travel to Egypt
The young martial artists from the Shotokan-ZA nation team recently travelled all the way to Egypt to participate in a fighting championship against five other countries, and they surely didn't disappoint.
Nine young karate stars recently had the wonderful opportunity to visit Cairo, Egypt to participate in the World Union Karate-do Federation’s (WUKF) Six Nations Karate Competition.
The competition was extremely tough, but the Shotokan-ZA national team walked away with a total of five gold, six silver and three bronze medals, beating out champion competitors from Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Kuwait and India during this seven-day event.
Bekker Primary School learners, Shannon Olivier and Danielle Martin, were among the impressive fighters of the week, with Shannon besting all of her opponents in the free fighting division and going on to place second in the Kata division. Danielle also did very well, ending with a third position, also in the Kata division.
Stefan Schönborn from Monument High School excelled in both his Kata and free fighting divisions, placing first and second respectively.
Mixed in with serious preparation times and the actual fights, the team had the opportunity to visit a few breathtaking landmarks in the area, like the Great Pyramids and the Sphinx at Giza, the renowned Khan El-Khalili market and even a dinner right on the Nile River.
