Local organisation has to start over
Football Without Borders had hoped to open its computer lab and sports hub by now, but was taken for a ride when a company made off with all their money.
The team from Football Without Borders has recently been dealt a few heavy blows.
Their dream has always been to create a safe space where children from the community could come to learn, exercise and flourish.
The group had already cleared a space in Kromdraai while they were waiting for the sports equipment needed to create a training centre for the community. However, during protests by community members last year, the facility was vandalised and there was no funding to rebuild it.
The group also wanted to use containers as spaces where the children could learn and exercise. There is already a library container, but they wanted to expand on the opportunities presented to the community’s children by adding more containers. These 12m x 3m containers would be used as classrooms for a computer lab and a sports hub.
The foundations were laid and all that was needed was the four containers. But then the worst happened. After weeks of waiting and some investigative work, they discovered that the company that was supposed to provide the containers, and to whom they had already paid the funds, had closed its bank account and disappeared, taking the money with them.
Captain Muthan from the Honeydew Police confirmed that they are aware of the case and it is being investigated.
The organisation now needs to start over and would like to ask the community to assist them with funding to buy the much-needed containers. They will need about R150 000 to buy all four containers.
