Magalies Monster keeps riders coming back for more
All event finishers will receive a medal (Kids Event included).
Self-proclaimed FNB Magalies Monster MTB Classic addict, Raymond Travers (a West Rand local) hopes to secure his fifth event medal on Saturday, 1 June, when the 17th annual FNB Magalies Monster MTB Classic gets under way at ATKV Buffelspoort.
“The Monster, as it’s referred to by most mountain bikers, is characterised by tough hills, relatively technical single track and an all-round awesome experience in the race village at ATKV Buffelspoort,” Raymond said.
“In the beginning I was nervous about the race, but I have accepted that the Monster bites and that ‘conquering the Monster’ is a challenge. I have competed four consecutive years (2015–2018). My goal every year is to ‘properly’ conquer the Monster. By this I mean no ‘bike-hiking’.”
Raymond said he has lots of special FNB Magalies Monster MTB Classic memories.
“One of these memories is when Amy Beth McDougall flew past me with a ‘weekend warrior’ panting and cursing behind her. I shouted to him ‘I’ll give you R1 000 if you catch her’. He tried to catch her but eventually fell back and when I got to him he asked me ‘who is that girl’. So I told him that Amy is one of South Africa’s best female mountain bikers. If memory serves me correctly, Amy came second that year, behind Robyn de Groot.”
The first 1 000 mountain bikers to enter (and pay – Marathon/ Half Marathon/ Fun Ride) will receive an official event T-shirt. All event finishers will receive a medal (Kids Event included).
