A place for every child at the Khosa Mini Hockey Club

With a strong team and the best coaches behind it, the Khosa Mini Hockey Club is the place to be for any West Rand child who not only wants to play hockey, but who also wants to belong to something more.

For 40 solid years, the Khosa Mini Hockey Club has been part of the very foundation of Krugersdorp.

One of the very first of its kind, the club allowed children from all over to play hockey in a way they weren’t used to, a way that seemed completely different from what they saw in schools. This initiative sought for and, even more so today, attempted to teach the children about more than just the sport.

“Today’s kids have too much pressure in their lives, be it in academics, school sports, extracurricular activities, family, friends or fitting in. The club gives them the opportunity to take their minds off that while playing a game they love with friends, and teaching them discipline at the same time,” Deon du Toit, the club chairperson, explained.

The club practices every Saturday throughout the hockey season, from February to September, and the teams participate in multiple tournaments against other clubs. Every year, some of the older teams travel to other cities, like Cape Town in 2014, for major tournaments with some vacation fun sprinkled in.

“We choose everyone, experienced or not in hockey. There is no A or B team. We teach you hockey.” The club takes in both boys and girls ranging from U/4s and U/5s to U/13s, and currently has about 180 registered players with 20 coaches and eight committee members.

The best places to find more information, about the club are their web page at https://www.minihockey.co.za, or on their Facebook page, ‘Khosa Mini Hockey’.
