Cool Runners making running fun

Cool Runners is a fairly new initiative which brings together the more socially inclined runners to participate in weekly timed runs on a safe route with like-minded fitness enthusiasts.

Krugersdorp is serious about running. Just take a look out your window during the early mornings, late afternoons and weekends.

Neither the cold nor the busy roads will stop fitness fanatics from getting their endorphins flowing for the day. Recently, many locals also made the town proud at the 2019 Comrades Marathon, racking up some serious competitive finishing times.

There is often camaraderie among these runners, with many joining running clubs to improve their techniques. But what about those who enjoy running but aren’t planning on doing a major marathon soon? For the more socially inclined runners, there is now a new alternative to clubs for serious runners. The Cool Runners club members are a collection of veteran and so-called newbie runners.

The members get together on Tuesdays at about 5pm for timed runs, and Saturday and Sunday mornings for longer runs, setting off together on a four or seven kilometre run.

Cool Runners functions under the Noordheuwel Country Club umbrella. One of these advantages is the use of the club grounds to gather and set up refreshment tables. They set off from the Country Club’s third gate and take on a well-planned route through Noordheuwel, which was made as safe as possible. This route is made up of multiple uphill climbs and downhill stretches, giving the runners a truly excellent workout.

Social runners have the opportunity to train without much pressure to compete, while there is also an opportunity for runners who wish to push themselves past their limits and participate in competitive races.

A social running membership costs only R310 per year for adults, and R200 for junior runners, but those picking up the full membership for R550 and R300 respectively will also receive a certified running number through the club, with which they can compete professionally.

Runners just looking to start out or to participate in social running, can contact Warren on 084 498 0943 or send an email to info@coolrunners101.co.za.
