Local couple shows paddle-power

Krugersdorp couple, Kobus and Caroline Filmalter, enjoyed the training opportunity.

Despite the expected mid-winter freezing temperatures and cold winds churning the dam up into a frenzy, this year’s annual Centurion 9 Miler took place on a placid and warm Gauteng day on Saturday, 27 July!

With nearly 100 paddlers on the water, there was a enjoyable social vibe present as the paddlers started the racing season by preparing for the major upcoming events on the calendar.

Paddlers of all ages, from U/14 to over 70, enjoyed the opportunity to train with company along the way to exchange chirps and encouragement.

Krugersdorp couple, Kobus and Caroline Filmalter, enjoyed the training opportunity and the company, and won the Veteran age category, as well as being the first Mixed Double (male/ female combination), finishing in a time of one hour, 13 minutes.

The August calendar is filled with races scheduled to assist paddlers to build fitness and improve on stamina and speed on both rivers and flat water dams as the season heads towards the rainy months.

With the rain comes white water excitement, which builds up towards the peak of the annual canoe racing season which culminates in early 2020 with major national events such as the Dusi – an extreme endurance event.
