Kagiso road race sees fight to the finish

A hundred athletes recently gathered at the Kagiso Sport Complex to compete in a mile-long road race.

On a day that can only be described as perfect running weather, a total of 100 athletes took to the streets of Kagiso to take part in the first of the two Zet Sinqe Series events.

The event was hosted at the Kagiso Sports Complex on 25 August and after a quick 5km fun run it came down to the real reason for the event. The Zithulele Sinqe Foundation, in conjunction with Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA), hosted street mile runs for the U/13 to U/19 age groups.

The U/19 men’s race came down to a nail-biting finish.

Some of the performances that stood out were those of the U/13 boys’ and girls’ winners. Temoso Modisamongwe and Khentsoni Mthombo ran the mile in five minutes, 17 seconds and five minutes, 46 seconds respectively.

“We are delighted by some of the results and the excitement from the youngsters,” said CGA General Manager, Mandla Radebe. “This is what we want to see.”

One of the highlights of the day was definitely the final race of the day. Supporters were jumping up and down when the U/19 men’s race became a fight to the finish and it was Ntokozo Sibiya who finished two second earlier than Prince Meabela, with times of four minutes, 36 seconds and four minutes, 38 seconds respectively.

A statement from the Zithulele Sinqe Foundation addressed their vision – to identify and nurture young athletic talent not only on the track but also intellectually.

“To this end, the Foundation and the CGA are making contact with schools who have athletics bursaries on offer and asking them to send their scouts to the races so that the talent we see can hopefully find a home,” explained the statement.

The next event will take place on 12 October at Orange Farm.
