Local canoeist ready for big season
Florida Lake Canoe Club hosted a river race from Daleside in the South.
The canoeing clubs are hustling to support the training on white water rapids for canoeists planning to do the major A Grade Fish River Canoe Marathon in September.
The river race season has kicked off despite the lack of rain as the rivers bake and dry up in the heat of the early Spring.
Florida Lake Canoe Club hosted a river race from Daleside in the South, on the Klip River, to finish in Meyerton, on Sunday 25 August. The distance of 30km provided opportunities for paddlers to gain experience and become familiar with the white waters and collect points towards participating in the Fish River Marathon.
For some paddlers it will be their first A Grade river race, with huge white water/ rolling wave trains, while for others it will be a challenge to improve the time and enjoyment of the previous year’s Fish River Marathon achievements.
Krugersdorp resident, Jaco Lategan, is by no means a novice on the white water at the Fish River. This year, he partnered with Shelley Robertson from Centurion Canoe Club, to finish the Florida Lake Canoe Club 30km river race in a time of two hours, 22 minutes. They also finished as the fourth Mixed Double Combination (male and female partnership).
They are both looking forward to their exciting Fish River adventure at the end of September.
