Like greased lightning

Athletes from all over came to compete in the PUMA School of Speed series and show they are the best.

Track and field athletes gathered at the Ruimsig Stadium on 25 January to show that they are worthy of becoming PUMA Future Stars.

The PUMA School of Speed Series is an athletics field and track series headed by Olympics sprinter Usain Bolt, the world’s fastest man. The series was launched in 2016 and consists of five meets every year.

The aim of the series is to identify exceptional young South African track and field athletes, and give them a platform to compete against the nation’s best and perfect their skill. There is also a chance for these athletes to be scouted and contracted to the PUMA Squad.

Despite the weather looking a bit grey that morning, athletes between the ages of 14 and 19 came out to compete in the high and long jump, hurdles and track items.

Three Monument High School athletes also participated and did very well.

Jayden van den Berg finished second with a time of 24,13 seconds in the second heat of the boys U/15 200m race, and when it came to the finals he finished in 23,66 seconds, a time that ensured him a third place.

In the first heat of the boys U/15 100m race, Jayden came second with a time of 11,53 seconds, but in the final he ran the 100m in 11,72 seconds, finishing fifth.

Olerato Motsiri finished the first heat of the boys U/17 200m in fifth place, in a time of 23,56 seconds.

Another athlete that gave it his all was Laney Joseph who competed in the boys U/17 100m and 200m races.

He ran in the third heat of the 200m and finished first in a time of 22,41 seconds. Joseph also finished second in the first heat of the boys U/17 100m and made it to the finals where he took second place with a time of 10,82 seconds.
