Record-setting performance from local dojo

The West Rand region ended with a spectacular gold medal standing of 22, and of these 20 were secured by members of the Morgan Moss Karate dojo in Krugersdorp.

In the first major event in over a year, the members of the Morgan Moss Karate (MMK) dojo raked in the medals.

Morgan Moss, the chief instructor at the dojo explained that the members represented the West Rand Karate Federation at the Gauteng Provincial Karate Championships in Turffontein from 20 to 21 February, and according to him they did so with a record-setting performance.

In addition to the 20 gold medals, MMK also secured six silver and 12 bronze medals.

A total of 38 MMK members were selected to represent the Gauteng Provincial Karate team, 13 of them for the first time.

The West Rand Sports Confederation also named the club the Overall Sports Club of the Year.

“I believe one of the major differences between our club and others is that we have a team of instructors and management staff that contribute tirelessly to the overall development of the students and club,” Morgan said.

The pandemic has not been easy on the club or on karate as a whole, but they continued to find new ways to train and improve. The result of this continued effort showed at the recent championships.

The provincial athletes will now be travelling to take on the best that South Africa has to offer, with the juniors going to KwaZulu-Natal and the seniors to Mpumalanga.
