The Gauteng Boxing Association has a new Secretary General

After spending only two minutes with Susan it was quite clear why she loves this sport so much.

Susan da Silva is a humble woman who does not like the spotlight to be on her, despite having made a name for herself – one she can be proud of. She would rather divert the attention towards the boxers at her club.

Susan, who has been with the Krugersdorp West Boxing Club for almost 21 years was recently elected as the Gauteng Boxing Organisation’s Secretary General. This is only the latest in a long list of titles Susan has secured over the years.

She is also the West Rand Boxing Organisation’s Treasurer, and was named the Administrator of the Year at the 2020 Women in Sports Awards.

After spending only two minutes with Susan it was quite clear why she loves this sport so much.

“I have a love for my club and the boxers at the club, they keep me coming back. When they walk through those doors they have already crept into your heart,” she said.

These titles and awards have come as a surprise and Susan explained that she did not expect or even know that she was in the running for the Gauteng position.

“Everything is still so new, something I will have to get accustomed to.”

Susan grew up in the club. Her late father, Ouboet Gouws was part of the club for many years. Her brother and later her son also boxed for the club. Susan eventually became a qualified boxing coach and enjoys teaching the children at the club.

When asked if she would have liked to be a boxer, Susan explained that in her younger years girls weren’t allowed to box but she still believes she would have enjoyed it.

She believes the discipline will set you on the right path in your boxing career, and added that becoming a good boxer depends on a few factors.

“Some children are born with a natural talent for certain sports, while others have to be taught,” she said while explaining that everyone has their own path to greatness.

Susan ended by saying she was excited about the new challenges that she would be facing.
