Karate club can’t be beaten

The Morgan Moss Karate centre's members recently walked away with the most gold medals of any club at the Gauteng Karate Championships and Provincial Team Trials.

Morgan Moss Karate has shown that they’re not just the top of the top in the West, but also in Gauteng as a whole.

On the weekend of February 4 to 6, club members represented the West Rand Regional Karate Team at the 2022 Gauteng Karate Championships and Provincial Team Trials, walking away with more than a few handfuls of medals.

The cream of Gauteng karate hit the mats in the Portuguese Hall in Turffontein in this gruelling three-day match-up of adrenalin-fuelled, precision-based, hand-to-hand combat.

This was the first karate event to allow spectators since the start of the pandemic,” Morgan Moss explained.

“The roar of the crowd and family support truly made the difference as our students dominated the event. The West Rand Region was crowned Overall Elite Champions for the second year running, beating Johannesburg Region by one gold medal. Of the 24 gold medals that were brought home to the West Rand, 21 belonged to Morgan Moss Karate.”

Its karateka also secured 10 silver and 13 bronze medals.

The Senior Male Team also made history by becoming the first dojo to win every Senior Male Kumite category at a single provincial tournament.

The dojo had 40 athletes selected to represent Gauteng at the upcoming Junior and Senior National Championships which takes place in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng respectively.”

The following members each received gold and/ or silver medals:
Hayley Bothma (gold), Sarah Bronn (gold), Sara Cechova (gold), Cliane Francisco Sydney Owen (gold), Chloe Preston (gold and silver), William Ash (gold), Dino Belfi (gold and silver), Luandro Bornman (two gold), Dylan Bothma (gold), Sam Cech (gold), Ruben Coetzee (gold), Janco de Wet (gold), Jonno Duncan (two gold), Dylan Flusk (gold), Tyrone Gray (gold), Morgan Moss (gold), Gavin Pansegrouw (gold), Bili Tian (gold), Bronwynn Bronn (silver), Lexi Muller (silver), Marissa Schoombie (silver), Brogan Taylor (silver and fifth), and Martin Bergh (silver).
