Injured cyclist not part of race – Safety Commissioner for Cycling SA in Gauteng stated

Cycling South Africa in Gauteng's safety commissioner reveals injured cyclist was not wearing a race number nor had a number on the bike.

The News recently reported about a cyclist that had to be airlifted after being struck by a motorist on the M5 this past weekend.

Although Netcare 911 stated that the cyclist had been part of a cycling race on the day, the News was informed that although the cyclist was on the same route, the cyclist was not part of a race.

The News spoke to Craig Bezuidenhout, the Safety Commissioner for Cycling South Africa in Gauteng, who was also on the scene.

He explained that the accident happened early Sunday morning, February 5 and he arrived on the scene after the accident had already happened. He said the cyclist, who was not wearing a race number or had a number on the bike, was hit from behind while riding in the emergency lane.

The cyclist was thus adhering to cycling rules in the area when he was struck.

Bezuidenhout explained further that although the incident happened on one of the routes that their cyclists were to ride on, they had in fact not reached that point in the race yet. Additionally, they always ensure the safety of the cyclists by putting up signage, filling potholes, and placing marshalls along the route.
