Kagiso boxer with genetic disorder is truly an inspiration
Family and friends say Gift Modise's physical challenges won't stop him from doing what he loves – being an inspiration to young boxers.
To be a good sportsman, one must have a presence on and off the field. Whether you favour individual or team sports, every athlete must display hard work, resilience, and a never-say-die-attitude.
A local boxer with a genetic disorder, Gift Modise, does exactly that.
Gift was born with Down syndrome which meant that physically and mentally he cannot compete or participate in some sports, however, it does not stop him from being an influential person. Gift has played different sports, from football to running, but identified boxing as the sport he is most passionate about.

He trains regularly at the Kagiso Sports and Recreation Centre and while he does not compete in any major tournaments or fights, he is an influence among the members at the gym and a source of inspiration as he proves that regardless of your challenges as an individual, you can always fight back and play an important role.
Mpho Seforo has known Gift for over five years. While he has many personal accomplishments in his boxing career, he insisted that Gift was one of his biggest motivators and influencers in the sport.
“I met him in 2018 and was touched by how passionate he is about boxing. We trained three times a week and never looked back since. I was surprised how much he knows and can do and he has never missed a day at the gym,” said Seforo.
Outside the ring, Seforo and Gift have a strong friendship and always laugh when they are training at the gym.
“He’s my friend and that will never change.”
Mathapelo Modise, Gift’s sister, added that he is popular in the community for his passion and dedication to sports despite his genetic disorder.
“He will always make time to get fit or go to the gym. That’s just who he is. His physical challenges won’t stop him from doing what he loves.”
