Kagiso elders dominate Golden Games

The West Rand's elderly ladies' soccer team won big following the success of the National Golden Games.

Age is but a number and for a group of elders from Kagiso, it does not stop them from being active, enjoying themselves on the sports field and showcasing their talent.

Twenty-two elders from Kagiso represented the West Rand at the National Golden Games which was held earlier this year in the North West. The ladies’ soccer team and the athletics team both made big strides at the game but it was the ladies’ soccer team who emerged victorious, winning top prizes.

The athletics team participated in various sporting codes at the games.

The annual Golden Games is a national event where persons older than 65 compete in various sporting codes on provincial and national levels. The games are part of the Sport and Recreation Department’s Older Persons Programme and the games took place at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg. The elderly had the opportunity to participate in various items such as Pegging, Duck Walk, Goal Shooting, Jukskei, Ball Relay, Passing the Ball, Ring the Stick, Rugby Ball Throw, Sprints and Relays among other things. Various regions from all over the country made sure to show skills and talent to fly their flags high and win top honours.

Fortunately enough the ladies’ soccer team from the West Rand made sure that they represented Krugersdorp in the best way by winning the soccer tournament and bagging a whopping R20 000 for their efforts.

According to Joseph Kgang, the West Rand team’s co-ordinator, there was a higher number of elders participating in this year’s games than the previous year. He expects that many more people will follow in their footsteps and join them in the future, as he feels age will not prevent them from getting fitter.
