Khosa Cricket Club a force to reckon with

Khosa Cricket Club is proud of their achievements this past season with one of their teams winning the league and other teams finishing within the top six.

Khosa Cricket Club has just finished its season and reflected on what can be described as a memorable one with some standout performances.

The club competes in the Central Gauteng Lions (CGL) Club Cricket League and wants to shine a light on the efforts of the players and coaches after a long and challenging, yet successful season.

According to the club’s chairperson, Danie Volkwyn, they entered two men’s teams and a ladies team for the Saturday league and five Sunday sides.

“We also have a very strong veterans team [over 40s and 50s] with some national and provincial representation. This was the first year that we could boast Premier League A and B sides. We are one of only five clubs in Gauteng to achieve this. Our premier sides are our flagship sides, and they performed consistently well throughout the season. It is no mean feat to enter so many sides and honour every fixture. This is a good indication of the depth of our club and player base. It is also indicative of a strong club administration. A big thank you to all captains for their contributions towards team selection, team management, and flying the Khosa flag high,” Danie said.

He added that one of the most exciting aspects of the season is the amount of young talent that are coming through the club and are already playing in the top sides. This was one of the first seasons where they fielded three U18 players in the Premier A side.

The club’s nursery sides, the U5s and SA U5s have done very well this season under the guidance and mentorship of two great coaches and mentors, Anton Herselmann and Luigi Ragni. All the teams have performed well under the guidance of the club coaches Jacques Ackerman, Zander van der Merwe, Jan Ackerman (ladies), and the director of cricket Sami Bulbulia.

Final log results have not been published by CGL at the time of print, however, Danie confirmed their Premier League B side won the league and most of the other teams finished in the top six positions of their respective leagues.

“Our top sides played over 24 matches in various formats [20 overs, 50 overs and test-format cricket]. It is also very pleasing to share that one of our top players, Tiaan Brits has been offered a CGL contract. Our club has also entered seven sides into the CGL Jozi Cup Winter Tournament starting in May, three senior teams and four junior teams to be specific.

”Another highlight was the hosting of the Zimbabwe All Africa games team at our club for two games. We fielded a Khosa invitation team and we beat the Zimbabwe team in one of the fixtures. Zimbabwe went on to win the All Africa Games cricket tournament,” Danie continued.

Matthew Maritz is a star in the making for Khosa Cricket Club.

With a strong junior section, strong young talent in the senior section, a driven and passionate director of cricket, skilled coaches, and a dedicated committee, the club is in a good space and hopes it will continue its form in the 2024/ 2025 season that will start in September this year.

Danie has since appealed to the community that if anyone is open to playing they can contact him or visit the club.

“We are an open, multi-racial club. Our vision is to create an optimum environment for young and older cricketers, male and female, to come and express their talent, and be part of a club community that values the talent and diversity of our players and members on and off the field. We want to develop and create opportunities for our young aspiring cricketers and at the same time value the contributions of our older, more senior members. We want Khosa Sports Club to be your and your family’s home and a true community club. The club not only has great people, but also great facilities to offer to its members. We invite all aspiring cricketers, junior and senior, to come and join the winning culture of Khosa.”
