Magaliesburg sets stage for fierce cross-country school battles

The recent D2 Gauteng West Education Department Cross Country Championships showcased true local talent after athletes from various schools participated in Magaliesburg.

Various schools from Rand West City achieved podium finishes during the D2 Gauteng West Education Department Cross Country Championships at Hoërskool Bekker High School in Magaliesburg.

After his victory at the recent Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) Cross Country Championships in Germiston, Azania Noah continued where he left off by once again claiming victory at the D2 Cross Country in the boys U17.

U13 girls’ winners are Simnikiwe Cafile (Simunye Secondary School), Mieke van Rooyen (RAM), Rose Woate and Zinhle Mriba (Isiqalo Primary School).

Stephan Joubert from Hoërskool Riebeckrand High School started early from the blocks. However, he had to settle for third place with a time of 23:34. Stephan led for the entire first lap, and Tumelo Konyane from Randfontein High School (RHS) was second in 23:06. Azania, running for Kgothalang High School, made a move to win the race in 22:18, securing first place.

Winners of the boys U12 are Remoamogetse Rabotapi (Matlapaneng Primary School), Alunathi Bali (Maputle Primary School), Warona Moruledi (Mohlakeng Primary School) and Rose Woate from the D2 Gauteng West District.

“I was holding back in the early laps just to check my fitness level. With just a week after the CGA Cross Country Champs, I made a move and had to work with Tumelo to cover the lead by Stephan, who looked very strong on the day,” said Azania.

Winners of the U16 boys are Thumelo Khonyane (RHS), Azania Noah (Kgothalang High School) and Stephan Joubert (Riebeeckrand).

Lucky Thato, teacher at Laerskool Gerrit Maritz and chairperson of Warriors of West Athletics Club, said they are looking forward to the West Rand athletes in both clubs and schools’ cross country circles to bring more medals and podium places.
