Krugersdorp comes alive every Saturday at Sterkfontein parkrun
Every Saturday morning, Krugersdorp runners, families and even their dogs take on the 5km Sterkfontein parkrun – a free, timed event that celebrates fitness, fun, and community spirit.
Krugersdorp residents, families, friends and running enthusiasts gathered for the weekly Sterkfontein parkrun this past Saturday, November 29.
For the local running community, the 5km challenge is more than just a run; it’s a chance to enjoy nature, push personal limits and connect with fellow participants.
According to organiser Roger Crichton, parkrun is a worldwide initiative that began in England in 2004 to provide a free, timed run to everyone. Today, there are over 11 million members globally, and South Africa boasts more than 220 parkrun events, all 5km in distance. Sterkfontein has hosted 270 parkruns to date with 10 270 finishers, organised by 563 dedicated volunteers.
He added that each week, roughly 100 participants, some accompanied by their dogs, take on the course, soaking in the sights of Krugersdorp along the trail paths.

“Participants are welcome to run or walk. Your time and position are recorded at the finish and emailed to you. All parkruns are free. The course is run entirely on trails, which can be muddy and puddle-filled after rain, but marshals and signs are in place to guide and ensure the safety of all runners and hikers,” Roger said.
This weekend’s parkrun also saw milestone achievements, including Walter du Plessis completing his 100th parkrun – a moment celebrated by volunteers and fellow participants.
Sterkfontein parkrun takes place every Saturday at 08:00 at Sterkfontein Heritage Lodge in Rant-en-Dal. The event is only cancelled in the case of lightning. Safety is a priority, with marshals and a trail walker ensuring that no participant is left behind.
Joining is simple: Anyone can register at www.parkrun.co.za to receive a personal barcode. This barcode is scanned at every finish and links your time to your position. Once registered, participants do not need to belong to a club or be an active runner – all you need to do is show up and take part.
“Running at Sterkfontein parkrun is about challenging yourself, enjoying the outdoors, and being part of a welcoming global community. Whether you’re chasing a personal best or just out for a stroll with your dog, parkrun is for everyone,” Roger concluded.
